The Spartan Grill

When I ate there Sunday I had not planned to do a review, so I did not note all of the things one should note to do a review. But I thought it'd be good to get people talking about it since May West was so much a part of our community.

As most of us know, May West on the corner of University and McClintock had a fire some time back. They have finally re-opened, as The Spartan Grill, American and Greek Cuisine, serving American and Greek food. SAme owners. The first notable difference is not the name, nor is it the change of menu, but the hours. This Spartan place is not a 24 hour restaurant. To that, I say GRRR.

Inside it has the same layout as before, with the bar, and the back area, and all that (although I gather there is probably no smoking in there now due to Tempe's tight butthole). Newly painted, new seats, and greek decorations, lots of grapes and whatnot milling about. It's not too overwhelming, but it is a strange. They have their May West cut out inside still, as memorabilia or something. It made me feel a little less creeped out, honestly.

The waitresses wear tight white shirts and teeny blue cheerleader skirts. It's incredibly tacky because I know they will not have sex with me; they probably won't have sex with you either, so I'm sure you agree. I guess that's the American part of the decoration...?

The menu is almost exactly the same. My dad complained that they no longer have the Heuvos Rancheros for $2.49, but that could have changed in 1981 for all I know. They added a SMALL section for greek food. They have some Gyros, a "feta dip" and greek salad. There were a few more items, but not enough to call it a Greek Restaurant.

The food came quickly. My dad got a greek salad, it was heavy on the oil and pepper, and lacking real seasoning. He said his Gyros was tasty, as was my cheese crisp with tomatoes.

At check-out they have those fluffy after dinner mints that are surprisingly hard, but sort of dissolve in your mouth. The kind you have at grandmas, very yummy.

I plan to eat elsewhere unless they keep their doors open 24 hours. Other than that I think the changes they've made are reasonable, although calling it a greek restaurant is a stretch. The ambiance is fine, but it is not what it once was.

Comment, share your Spartan or May West experiences..
